Congolese Rumba
We are delighted to present this special exhibition, organised by the Kongolese Children’s Association (KCA), which traces the rich and vibrant history of Congolese Rumba from its origins in the 1930s to its prestigious recognition by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in December 2021.
In the 1930s, a generation of Congolese musicians gave birth to a captivating new rhythm: Congolese rumba. This musical genre resulted from the harmonious fusion of traditional Congolese rhythms and Afro-Cuban music. With its catchy beat, irresistible guitar rhythms and expressive vocals, Congolese rumba quickly conquered all of Africa.
The 1930s in the Democratic Republic of the Congo were characterised by profound social and political changes under Belgian colonial rule. The urbanisation and industrialisation of Congolese cities encouraged new cultural exchanges and the emergence of a cosmopolitan society.
This era saw a growing interest in various forms of entertainment and cultural expression, providing fertile ground for the development of new musical genres. Against this backdrop, Congolese Rumba emerged as a symbol of cultural resilience and creativity, reflecting the dynamic spirit of the Congolese people.
